📜 National Tennessee Day History
Tennessee played a crucial role as a volunteer state during the Creek War, which took place from 1813 to 1814. Led by Andrew Jackson, Tennessee volunteers took part in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama. This battle was in response to a Creek warrior attack on Fort Mims, Alabama, which resulted in the destruction of numerous Muskogee settlements. Despite efforts to assimilate into mainstream culture, the Cherokee of East Tennessee were forcefully removed from their land by the US government from 1838 to 1839. They were sent to Oklahoma along with other Native American tribes on the Trail of Tears.
During the American Civil War in 1861, Tennessee initially sided with the Union but later chose to secede and join the newly formed Confederate States of America. The Union forces won most of the battles in Tennessee and gained control of the majority of the territory by 1864. Tennessee became a significant location for protests against racial segregation following the Nashville civil rights sit-ins from 1959 to 1961 and the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike.
