📜 National Valentino Day History

Rudolph Valentino, originally named Rodolfo Pietro Filiberto Raffaello Guglielmi de Valentina d’Antonguella, was born in Castellaneta, Apulia, in the Kingdom of Italy. He became the first male Hollywood sex symbol of his time due to his exceptional good looks and charming personality. Valentino started from humble beginnings, working various jobs such as busboy, gardener, and even cab driver, before venturing into the production business and eventually pursuing a career in silent films. He began as an extra in the film “Alimony.”

It wasn’t until 1919 that Valentino gained recognition for his supporting roles, but it was his major role in the film “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” that truly propelled him to stardom. The film was a huge success, becoming one of the highest-grossing silent films and reaching $1 million at the box office. Valentino solidified his image as the Latin lover in the 1921 film “The Sheik,” which greatly influenced his career. In 1922, he worked on “Blood and Sand,” another highly successful film of the year, and secured a profitable agreement with United Artists. He went on to star in more blockbuster films like “The Eagle” and “The Son of the Sheik.”

Valentino was a talented and accomplished performer. Unfortunately, on August 15, 1926, he fell and was diagnosed with appendicitis and stomach ulcers. A medical condition resembling appendicitis, called Valentino’s syndrome, was named after him. He developed peritonitis after surgery, and his health deteriorated. Tragically, he passed away on August 23 of that year at the young age of 31. To honor his legacy, National Valentino Day was established.
