Pet Diabetes Month is observed annually in November to bring attention to diabetes in pets. The aim is to educate people about this condition, as it affects approximately one in every 300 adult dogs and one in every 230 cats in the United States. Diabetes in dogs is characterized by a lack of insulin production or utilization, leading to the inability to convert food into energy. Consequently, sugar remains in the bloodstream, causing symptoms such as tiredness and various health issues. While there is no cure for diabetes in pets, it can be effectively managed through medication and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

📜 Pet Diabetes Month History

In 1889, Joseph von Mering and Oskar Minkowski conducted an experiment showing that removing a dog’s pancreas leads to diabetes. This discovery was significant because it revealed that the pancreas produces a substance that helps the body properly use glucose in the bloodstream. In 1915, Schafer named this substance “insulin.” The purification of insulin in the 1920s marked a major advancement in diabetes treatment. Surgeons Frederick Banting and Charles Best began working on synthesizing insulin in 1921 and successfully demonstrated that pancreatic extracts could lower blood sugar levels. James Collip joined their efforts and successfully produced insulin from beef pancreas for diabetic patients. They tested their methods on dogs and then on patients in 1922, achieving positive results. Banting received the Nobel Prize in 1923 for his insulin work, and his birthday, November 14, is now celebrated as World Diabetes Day every year.
