The Instructional Television and Radio Center was created in 1952 to share educational programming. In 1967, the Public Broadcasting Act established the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) as a nonprofit organization. It was decided that educational television should be called “public television” and CPB would support program diversity and the growth of non-commercial broadcasting. CPB also provided funding to local stations for program development. However, in 1970, CPB shut down NET for refusing to stop airing controversial documentaries. It was replaced by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), while NET merged with W.N.D.T to form W.N.E.T, which became PBS’s main member station. Today, PBS is the largest public television broadcaster in the United States, with over 350 member stations, many of which are owned by educational institutions. Since 2004, PBS has consistently been rated as the most trusted institution in the country, surpassing commercial broadcasts, cable TV, newspapers, and streaming services.
