In 1973, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and physics from Stanford University, and in 1975, she obtained a master’s degree in physics from the same institution. She completed her Ph.D. in physics in 1978, focusing her research on the interaction between X-rays and the interstellar medium. Among 8,000 applicants, Ride was selected as one of the 35 individuals for the NASA astronaut training program. She was part of the pioneering group of female American astronauts, known as NASA Astronaut Group 8. On June 18, 1983, Dr. Ride embarked on her space journey as the mission specialist on STS-7, the second mission of the Orbit Shuttle Challenger. The launch took place at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.
