She was part of the pioneering group of female American astronauts, known as NASA Astronaut Group 8. On June 18, 1983, Dr. Ride embarked on her space journey as the mission specialist on STS-7, the second mission of the Orbit Shuttle Challenger. The launch took place at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.
