Despite the brevity of the battle, the Mexicans suffered a significant defeat with approximately 600 soldiers killed and General Santa Anna himself captured along with many others. In order to secure his release, Santa Anna signed a treaty recognizing Texan independence. As a result of his victory, Sam Houston was elected president and a city was named in his honor.
