Selena, a talented singer, had already produced her first LP album by 1984. Despite her desire to sing in English, she focused on Tejano music. She defied expectations by becoming a highly successful Latina in the male-dominated Tejano music industry. By 1988, she had released five more hit singles.

Tragically, on March 31, 1995, Selena, then 23 years old, was shot by the head of her own fan club at a Days Inn in Corpus Christi.
