Unfortunately, her miniature artworks were criticized as distasteful, immoral, and nonsensical during the rise of the Nazi party in the late 1930s. Despite the challenges she faced, Sister Hummel found a way to support herself by selling her artwork when the convents were forced to close during World War II. Today, her work is still popularly sold as porcelain figurines around the world, especially in Germany.
π Sister Maria Hummel Day History
Sister Hummel, who had served as a novice for a year, was given the task of teaching art at a convent school. During her free time, she started painting pictures of children. Her fellow sisters admired her work and sent some samples to Emil Fink Verlag, a publishing company in Stuttgart that specialized in sacred art. The publisher decided to publish her paintings as postcards, which received a positive response. In 1934, her works were featured in books. Despite the harshness of the Nazi regime, Sister Hummel did not hesitate to address political issues. In 1937, she published a painting called “The Volunteers” that caught the attention of the Nazis and was criticized for portraying German children with exaggeratedly large heads. The Nazis were further angered by her inclusion of the Star of David in her art, leading to its banning in Germany.
In 1940, all religious schools were closed, leaving the nuns unemployed. Sister Hummel lived and worked in a small, confined space. The Nazis reduced her art earnings by half, leaving the nuns with meager income. Sister Hummel fell ill with tuberculosis and was hospitalized twice at a sanatorium in Isny am AllgΓ€u in 1944, but she was unable to fully recover. At the age of 37, she passed away on November 6, 1946, and was laid to rest at the convent cemetery.
