📜 Slinky Day History

The Jameses faced challenges when trying to market the Slinky to toy retailers. However, in November 1945, they were finally allowed to demonstrate the toy and it quickly became a hit. The first 400 units sold out in less than 90 minutes. The Slinky made its debut at the 1946 New York Toy Fair, and in 1952, the Slinky Dog was introduced. Throughout the 1950s, new Slinky toys like Slinky Suzie and Slinky Crazy Eyes were introduced.

In 1960, Richard James left the company after his wife filed for divorce. Betty James took over and managed to keep the original Slinky affordable. In 1996, a Slinky cost between $1.89 and $2.69. In 1964, the company was relocated to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and Betty James successfully dealt with creditors. Poof Products, Inc. acquired James Industries in 1998, and in 2003, James Industries merged with Poof Products, Inc. to form Poof-Slinky, Inc.

Aside from being a popular toy, the Slinky has been utilized as a tool for teaching, a portable radio antenna, and has even been studied by NASA for physics research.
