📜 Slow Art Day History

In 2008, Phil Terry started the “slow art” movement after an enlightening experience at the Jewish Museum in New York. Instead of quickly browsing through the museum’s displays, Terry focused on two abstract paintings and observed them closely. He became intrigued by the idea of what happens when art is given dedicated attention. As he spent more time with the artwork, he found that it sparked various thoughts and interpretations in his mind. This led Terry to conduct an experiment, which eventually evolved into Slow Art Day. By 2009, 16 institutions had embraced this concept and organized an official event. On Slow Art Day, visitors would sign up and be paired with a volunteer host to spend 10 minutes examining five different artworks. Afterwards, participants would gather for lunch to discuss their experiences. As of today, Slow Art Day is celebrated by nearly 1,500 museums and galleries worldwide, with the global event commencing in 2010.
