At the age of six in 1941, Tenzin Gyatso began his monastic studies, which covered a wide range of subjects including logic, the fine arts, Sanskrit, medicine, and Buddhist philosophy. Throughout his education, he received teachings from notable instructors such as Rating Rinpoche, Tathag Rinpoche, Ling Rinpoche, and Trijang Rinpoche. When he was 11 years old, the 14th Dalai Lama met Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian climber who became his close friend and taught him about the world.

Following China’s takeover of Tibet in 1950, Tenzin assumed full political control as Tibet’s leader. In 1954, he visited Beijing to meet Mao Zedong and participated as a representative at the first session of the National People’s Congress, where he was appointed as the vice-chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee. However, due to the Tibetan uprising and concerns for their safety, the Dalai Lama and his supporters fled to Dharamshala in northern India in 1959. In exile, he established the Tibetan government and embarked on a global campaign to advocate for the rights and freedom of the Tibetan people.
