📜 Stephen Foster Memorial Day History
In 1846, he came to Cincinnati, Ohio, to work as an accountant for his brother’s steamship company. It was during this time that he wrote his first successful song. In 1850, he returned to Pennsylvania and signed a contract with New York publishers Firth, Pond & Co. to create songs for the Christy Minstrels, a popular minstrel ensemble. Some of the songs were released under the name of the Christy Minstrels due to the publisher’s policies, and it wasn’t until 1879 that Foster was recognized as the songwriter.
After signing with Firth, Pond & Co., Foster focused on making a living as a songwriter, which was not yet considered a recognized profession. This period of his life was his most successful. Since he didn’t perform on stage, many people were unaware of his talents while he was alive.
However, Foster faced financial troubles and in 1857, he sold the rights to all of his future songs to his publishers for around $1,900. Most of his song income went to the singers and publishers. After moving to New York City in 1860, Foster began to write more melancholic songs like “Poor Drooping Maiden.” The following years were less productive for him, and he faced personal difficulties. At the age of 37, he died in what appeared to be a home accident, leaving behind approximately 200 songs for which he had written both the lyrics and the music.
In honor of Foster, President Harry Truman established a memorial day on January 13, 1951. It was officially recognized as Stephen Foster Memorial Day in 1966 and celebrated the following year.
