The Netherlands officially abolished slavery in Suriname in 1863, but true freedom for the slaves was still a distant reality. Plantation owners took advantage of a ten-year transition period to exploit their former slaves for cheap labor. In 1873, when the transition period ended, the ex-slaves left the plantations and moved to Paramaribo, the capital city. After World War II, Suriname became part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with the Netherlands handling foreign and defense matters. However, the local government, particularly the Creole members of the National Party of Suriname (N.P.S.), started discussions to achieve complete independence. Their efforts were successful, and Suriname gained independence on November 25, 1975. The N.P.S. leader at the time, Henck Arron, became the country’s first Prime Minister, and Johan Ferrier, a former governor, became the first President.
