In 1973, the Glamorgan Police decided to cancel the race due to concerns about traffic delays. However, the race made a comeback in 1984 but with a smaller field of only 14 racers participating in a one-mile event. This time, the marathon introduced a new tradition by having three unknown runners carry the Nos Galan Torch, symbolizing the past, present, and future of sports.

The festivities kick off with a church service in Llanwynno, followed by the placement of a wreath on Guto Nyth Brân’s tomb at the church cemetery. The torch is then lit and taken to the nearby town of Mountain Ash, where the main celebration occurs.

Over the years, the race format has changed several times. Currently, participants run three laps around the town center, starting on Henry Street and finishing at the memorial statue of Guto on Oxford Street.

The event begins with street entertainment and fun run races for children, and it concludes with a church service, a race for elite runners, and the presentation of awards.
