They then proceed to the Royal Chapel for a ceremonial sitting of Tynwald, also called the “Midsummer Court,” which has been a tradition since the 10th century. The Acts are announced on Tynwald Day and later confirmed during the Tynwald session in St. John’s village. 📜 Tynwald Day History
The Vikings arrived on the Isle of Man around 800 A.D. and controlled the island for 45 years. They later handed it over to the King of Scotland in 1266. Despite changes in ownership, the island’s unique administrative system has remained unchanged. In 1979, Tynwald, the legislative body of the Isle of Man, held a year-long celebration to mark its centenary. As part of this commemoration, a replica Viking longship was built to honor the Norse expeditions from Norway to the island. Tynwald Day, the annual celebration, takes place on June 24th, which coincides with Midsummer’s Day and John the Baptist’s Day. Interestingly, even after the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar in 1753, the Isle of Man continued to use the Julian Calendar to determine the date for Tynwald Day, resulting in an 11-day difference.
The Queen is recognized as the Lord of Mann on the Isle of Man, which is a Crown dependency. In July 1945, King George VI became the first British monarch to rule at St. John’s on the island. As the Isle of Man has no representation in the United Kingdom, the laws of the UK do not automatically apply there.
