Two individuals named Rob Neyland and Ron Shelton, known as Carvin ‘Marvin and the Snowflakes, began making snow sculptures in front of their real estate office during Ullr Fest. Their talent and dedication led them to win the state snow sculpture competitions in Breckenridge during the late 1980s.

The success of Neyland and Shelton’s teams allowed them to travel abroad and participate in other state finals, where they met new people and expanded their skills. In 1991, Breckenridge hosted the first International Snow Sculpture Championships, moving the competition to the former Bell Tower Mall parking lot instead of the street. Since then, snow carving has gained even more popularity.
