After discovering that many people in France played musical instruments, Fleuret was inspired to use music as a way to bring people together on the streets. As a result, Paris hosted the first “Day of Music” or “Fête de la Musique” in 1982.

The Fête de la Musique aimed to promote music in two ways: by encouraging both amateur and professional musicians to perform in public spaces and by organizing free concerts that featured a variety of music genres, exposing the general public to new music. The official organization in Paris promoted free concerts and performances with the slogan “Faites de la musique” (Make music), which was also adopted by other participating cities.

Over the years, the festival has gained international recognition, and now more than 120 countries celebrate it. It is known by different names such as World Day of Music, World Music Day, or International Music Day, but they all refer to the same holiday.
