📜 World Fiddle Day History

In 900 A.D., the Persian geographer Ibn Khurradadhbih compared the fiddle to the ancient bowed lira in his written work. He noted that the lira, known as “lr” in Arabic, was a common instrument in Byzantine and Islamic Empires, similar to the early form of the fiddle called “rabb.” This comparison led some European writers to use the terms “fiddle” and “lira” interchangeably to describe bowed instruments.

Throughout the 11th and 12th centuries, the lira gained popularity in Europe. There were two types of fiddles in Europe during this time. One was a square-shaped instrument called the “viola da braccio” or “arm viol,” which was carried in the arms and later evolved into the violin. The other type was the “viola da gamba” or “leg viol,” which was played by resting the instrument’s neck on the player’s shoulders and holding the lower portion between their knees. Over time, the louder and initially less prestigious “viola da braccio” family replaced the elegant gamba as a prominent instrument during the Renaissance.
