📜 World Reef Awareness Day History
Around 440 million years ago, during an ice age, sea temperatures dropped dramatically, leading to a decline in the number of corals in the ocean. This period is known as the Ordovician-Silurian Extinction Event. However, about 410 million years ago, during the Devonian period, corals began to reappear and a rare type of reef called stony corals started to thrive. Unfortunately, around 350 million years ago, the erratic sea levels caused corals to vanish once again.
After a gap of 100 million years, corals reappeared, only to disappear again 250 million years ago during the Permo-Triassic Extinction Event, which had a devastating impact on over 90% of marine life. This extinction was caused by lower oxygen levels and higher carbon dioxide levels in the ocean.
Coral reefs resurfaced about 46 million years ago and vanished temporarily during the middle of the Eocene era. However, they made a comeback 20 million years later as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770.
Unfortunately, in recent times, some of the most valuable reefs have been declining due to coral bleaching, rising ocean temperatures, and toxic pollution. Additionally, the use of harmful sunscreens and increased tourism are considered threats to the health of coral reefs.
