Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, India, came from a Tamil Muslim family. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Saint Joseph’s College and later pursued aeronautical engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology. Joining the Defense Research and Development Organization’s Aeronautical Development Establishment, he had a successful career in science, becoming India’s most renowned nuclear scientist by the 1990s.

In 2002, Kalam was inaugurated as the 11th President of India and served for five years. Known as the “People’s President,” he gained widespread admiration and respect during his presidency. After his term, he became a revered speaker at various universities and held notable positions such as visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, honorary fellow at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology. Kalam’s expertise was acknowledged with seven honorary doctorates from 40 universities.

Tragically, on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, Kalam suffered a heart attack and passed away at Bethany Hospital.
