📜 World Thinking Day History

In 1926, delegates from different countries met in New York for the 4th World Conference at Camp Edith Macy, which is now called the Edith Macy Conference Center. They came together and decided to establish a special day for guides and girl scouts. This day, known as Thinking Day, was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Lord Baden-Powell and his wife Olave, who were the founders of the scout and guide organization.

Later that same year, a delegate from Belgium proposed that girls should contribute donations to the organization, creating the World Thinking Day Fund, as a way to show their gratitude. Lord Baden-Powell supported this idea and wrote a letter to all guides and girl scouts around the world, asking them to donate a penny, which was enough to buy a loaf of bread at that time.

In 1999, during the Dubai Conference, the name of Thinking Day was changed to World Thinking Day. Today, this event is celebrated globally and encourages participants to think about important global issues.

The theme for World Thinking Day 2022 is “Our World, Our Equal Future: The Environment and Gender Equality.” Due to the ongoing pandemic, WAGGGS world centers are sponsoring a free Global Thinking Day live session to allow girl guides and girl scouts from all over the world to connect and have conversations with each other.
